Blood Can Save a Life -- IF Allowed

Image
Imagine: A tragic event stikes America once again, leaving a number of victims being transported to the hospital in need of blood. Of course you'd like to donate! But, if you are a sexually active gay man, don't be hopeful that they will accept your blood due to a ban. As I have mentioned numerous times before, the LGBTQ community if fighting for their equality concerning things like, marriage, anti-discrimination laws, bathroom/locker room usage and now blood donation. From The Daily Beast This ban, according to  The Columbian Medical Review , originated in 1983 in response to the HIV/AIDS scare. The government's original intentions were in emergency mode, trying to stop something so deadly from spreading; but this turned into a permanent policy for the next 30+ years. The people who were found to be most at risk were: "men who have sex with men (MSM), women who have sex with MSM, and transgender people who were categorized as MSM." This ban was just suppo...

Sexually Undereducated Youth

Image
You can ask any one of your parents if they believe that sexual education is an important competent of high school (or middle school), and I am positive that 100% of them would response with a firm, yes. It is common knowledge that young teenagers need to learn about the birds and the bees as they are growing up and going through puberty. However, this highly needed sex education is primarily centered around one single sexual orientation, being straight. Most of which is discussed within the curriculum is centered around a boy and a girl. Our society is finally starting to catch up with the LGBTQ movement but the one thing still left behind is sexual education for the youth. From Thisisafrica I know plenty of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, etc., people who have mentioned once before that they have not been educated on anything related to their sexual orientation. Any parent of a straight student would be infuriated if their child was not educated in this realm, so how do y...

Icing on the Cake

Image
I am sure most of you have heard about the Supreme Court case involving a man's refusal to make a wedding cake for a gay couple in Colorado.  Fox News  adds that this disagreement began in 2012, so it has been six years coming. This case, Masterpi ece Cakesho p vs Colorado Civil Rights Commission, is just one of many ongoing debates regarding the issue of gay rights and religious practices/any type of opinion against same sex marriage. From the Daily Signal The legislative issues behind this case is the debate between first amendment rights and discrimination. Jack Phillips, owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop, claims that according to his first amendment rights he is legally allowed to refuse service because making cakes are a version of self expression/art. So Jack is saying that the state of Colorado forcing him to make this cake is an infringement of his right to free speech and free expression of religion. In his official statement on  Alliance Defending Freedom , h...

Bathroom Break

Image
Transgenders face a number of issues, one I already discussed being the disagreement on whether being transgender is a mental illness or an identity. Aside from that, when they complete their transition you'd think they would be content and finally happy. But that isn't the case at all. They are still challenged with discrimination, for example, the use of bathrooms. Bathrooms have always been an area of debate in America's history for people of color, people with disabilities and for now people that don't identify with their biological sex. Ashton Whitaker , from Kenosha, Wisconsin just recently settled a lawsuit with the Wisconsin School District in which he was paid $800,000 for his degrading experiences within the high school. He was told by administrators and teachers at his school that he wasn't allowed to use the boy's bathroom, even though that was the gender that he identified with. They also used female pronouns despite Whitaker's request to be i...

Another Kind of Crisis

Image
The United States has gone through a colossal amount of societal changes throughout its history as any developing nation would; but within the past two decades there has been a significant surge. The latest controversial issue flooding the U.S. is the debate on conflicting opinions regarding the LGBT community and specifically the rights for transgender individuals. The topic of debate is whether identifying transgenders suffer from a psychological disorder or that it is just one of many gender identifications. I am not very educated about this controversy so my curiosity lead me to a great deal of articles regarding the topic. As I clicked through numerous news articles, personal blogs, and medical forums, I found that almost every other source disagreed with one another, so its safe to say I will remain neutral on this whole debate for the duration of my blog. From Time Out Trans Student Educational Resources  defines transgender as, "encompassing term of many gender ...
